General description
The first years
When in the beginning of the twentier years there came the motor-bus, the NMVB found it was necessary to do something against it. A means of transport was wanted, which was fast and flexible. The last thing cannot always be said of a steam loc. Such a locomotive must be prepared long before it goes to ride. And when a loc is not neede for an hour or two, the water in the kettle must be kept on temperature. This is expensive because coal is needed and personel must be available.
To abandon these disadvantages, the NMVB in the begin of the years '20 entered into service the first "autorail". To be honest, it was a bus on rail-wheels. The first autorails were so much lookalike as a bus, that there was only a drivers seat on one side, and not on the back side. A disadvantage of this was, that these autorails had to be turned around on the terminus. Sometimes there was a turntable or rails in the form of a triangle, but many times these possibilities were not available. To get rid of this problem there were autorails with a mechanic fitted under it, with which the coach could be lifted and turned by the personal of the autorail, this without a turntable.
Later (begin years '30) the NMVB started building two-directional coaches. These coaches can best be looked after as tram-coach with on both side a driving cab. The (petrol) engine was situated under the floor. Later there followed also autorails with a diesel motor or with a diesel-electrical engine.
Rebuilding to ART
After the second world war the NMVB needed motor power for goods trams as replacement for the old steam locs. To get this power, many of the old autorails were rebuild (sometimes also made heavier) to tractor (the number got the letters ART before the number, instead of the letters AR standing for the number of autorails). Also after the war some new tractors were built.
The numbering of the autorails was from AR 1 until AR 300. That there are more numbers than there were autorails built (248) is because it happened more than once that a autorail was rebuilt so heavily, that a new number was introduced for it. When a autorail was rebuilt from autorail to tractor, then normally the same number was used; only the letters AR were replaced by ART.
Today
Some of these autorails can be seen today on the line to the grottes of Han and on the museum line of Erezee.

Rebuilding from AR to ART
Shortly after the second worldwar, there was a need to stop with steam traction. The NMVB took the older autorails and rebuilded them so that they were able to pull goods wagons. To do so, there were several adaptions:
- the weight was extended to the maximum which was allowed (about 18 tonnes on two axles)
- some tractors were rebuilt as light weight tractor (only 15 tonnes)
- the gear was changed, so that with the cost of a lower maximum speed, the pulling force was highened
- the old benzin motor (for so far still in use) was changed to a more powerful dieslmotor
- some autorails got the Westinghouse brake
The rebuilding was done in the workshops of the NMVB themselves. Below you find a list of the autorails which were rebuilded:
