The first plans for a line in these surroundings dates from 1893. A line was projected from Geraardsbergen over Mainvault, Quauvecamps to Quévrain. But the city of Ath was protesting against this plan. The city did expect that agricultural products of the surroundings should not be brought to the market in Ath, but by tram to the markets in Flobecq and Geraardsbergen. So the plans were changed, and plans for two lines radiating from Ath were made, the line from Ath to Flobecq (cap.99) and the line from Ath to Frasnes (cap.95). The part of the line from Mainvault north to Flobecq and Geraardsbergen of cap.162 was no longer needed.

When the line was created, it was short before the First World War, so the creating was not succesfull. The part from Mainvault to Grandglise was created, the part from Pommereul to Quévrain was also created (although only after the war). Of the part of the line between Grandglise to Pommereul, several parts were created, but this line was never opened for tram exploitation.
