In the begin of the years 50 the CFL was willing to abandon steam traction for shunting locomotives. After a bad trial of SNCF loc, the CFL ordered in 1953 six locs at Anglo-Franco-Belge. They were lookalike as the General Motors type G8, built in the USA in the years of the second world war. In other countries in Europe this type of loc was not used.
After some years the CFL planned to order 13 more locs. But because they were too expensive, the CFL ordered then the series 900 in France.
In 1954 the locs were delivered. The locs were used mostly in Esch sur Alzette and in Esch Belval until 1982, from which year they were used in the new shunting yard in Bettembourg. In later years they were also in use in Luxemburg. All usage was in shunting service.
