In 1970 the board of the CFL saw that many passengers services on electrified lines were carried out with diesel trains. As the De Dietrich trains became too old, it was necessary to buy new rolling stock. After testings with French trains SNCF series Z6185 (a three-part multiple unit, with the middle coach taken out), it looked good to the CFL to buy such stock. After testings, the CFL ordered in 1972 six multiple units of 2 coaches at Carel Fouche in France. They were a rebuild of SNCF series 6150 (riding around Paris). But in Luxemburg the stock had to consist of only 2 coaches, there could be one door per coach less, and the seats should be of 2+2 passengers instead of 2+3 as with SNCF.
In 1975 the multiple units were delivered. Until 1978 the CFL saw great problems with this stock.
In 1981 a large accident occurred with EMU 254. It was out of service for several months, and rebuilt at Carel-Fouchee. Parts of the 254 have later on been used in the 253, so they are now combined as one 253; the 254 is now out of service.
This stock could be seen all over the country of Luxemburg, but mostly in the south around Luxemburg-Esch-Rodange
