In order to reduce operating costs (steam locs are expensive in exploitation), the CFL in 1946 sought to achieve diesel motorwagons. The SNCF had already bought 50 motor wagons from 1935 to 1942 (series Z42100) at the company of De Dietrich. In 1947 the CFL ordered for 10 motorwagons. They were delivered only in 1949, because of a strike in the factory of De Dietrich. Later on, this company built 20 of the same motorwagons for the SNCF.
To the motor wagons, the CFL ordered also 14 coaches (numbers RZ1001-1010 and RZ1021-1024). The stock was equiped with normal buffers, so being able to pull one passengers coach or one goods wagon with it. The pulling of goods wagons has almost never occurred.
The motor wagons and coaches were in exploitation all over the CFL network.
Z109 was damaged in a severe accident in Wecker. Because the driver was sick, the train run further and further, until it rode onto a goods train in Wecker. In this accident three railway men were killed. The motor wagon was demolished after it.
From 1975-1978 the rest of the stock was taken out of service. Z105 and coach RZ 1011 have been preserved by the GAR (railway friends).
