In 1871 took place the creation of "Usine Metz", named to the proprietor Leon Metz. Already on 10-10-1871 the first blast furnaces was opened, in three years later two others followed. In 1874 the firm was property of "Hauts-Fourneaux d'Eich, de Dommeldange et d'Esch-sur-Alzette", all property of Leon Metz. In 1904 it went together into Le Gallais-Metz & Cie.

The places was connected with a factory owned narrow gauge railway line to Rothe Erde (from 1927-1972) and a factory owned normal gauge railway line to Belval (from 1991-2001).

In 1971 the last blast furnace was closed. But other steel works remained. In 1983 a modern steel wire factory was opened on this location. In 1994 it went into ARES (Aciéries Rodange-Esch Schifflange), for 76 % property of ProfilArbed-Luxembourg s.a. In 1994 a new electro steel factory was opened. In 2004 the property came into the holding of Mittal, later Arcelor-Mittal. In november 2011 the location of Schifflange was closed. Plans for new housing and offices exist at the local government of Esch-Sur-Alzette.
